Insatiable is a new Netflix original show about a teenage girl, Patty, who had been struggling with her weight since she was seven, experiencing bullying her entire life. One summer an unfortunate mishap with a homeless man outside a convenience store, turned out to be an actual “blessing”. Because of this incident, Patty spends her whole summer with her jaw wired shut and dependent on a liquid diet. This results in her “beautification” and a desire for revenge on everyone that had ever done her wrong. But, the way she plans to get revenge is to win a pageant.
I understand that pageants are empowering to people around the entire world but using that platform to prove how great she is, doesn’t seem like the best idea. And I get that the producers are trying to shed light on the lasting effects body shaming has on people with this show but the direction they went with the storyline was a definite hit and miss on an opportunity to create an eye opening TV show.
At first I thought the show would be about her actual struggles with her weight and then transition to her life after she got skinny, but she was overweight for like 15 minutes of all 12 episodes, so I was a little confused as to where the story would go. Turns out the main focus of the show was to get revenge on the people who treated her terribly.
I get that the producers we're trying to be satirical and funny but I honestly feel like they were trying too hard and most of the jokes were not remotely funny or just downright disgusting. For example, in the first episode, Patty’s pageant coach gets accused of molesting his former pageant coachee. Though the accusations were false, Patty’s best friend, Nonnie, uses that bit of information because she notices that Patty was starting to fancy her new coach, Bob Armstrong. And Patty responds, “ That just means I have a chance”, like was that supposed to be funny?
I have so many issues with Insatiable but the biggest issue I have with this show is the fact that Patty plays the victim over and over again. And she gets to play the victim because of her beauty; this show is telling their audience that there is a privilege that come with being pretty, or beautiful, or alluring. Because had Patty never gotten “pretty”, her attorney would have just “done his best to win the case and gone along with my life” (episode 2). Without giving to much away, Patty was almost faced with jail time and she used her new body to erase the evidence that would have put her at the crime scene.
The producers are fake woke. The fact that they would even come up with a plot with such backwards thinking proves that they don’t care about any of the issues they claim to shed light on in the show. They are telling the audience that it is okay to oversexualize women but only if it’s “for a good cause” (episode 5) and that skinny most definitely equivalates to beauty. Not only that but this show can be extremely damaging to be who struggle with eating disorders because of the recurring theme that skinny automatically equals pretty.
I could honestly go on and on about how trash this show is but then this article would never end. This show is cringe-worthy, primitive, and just downright stupid. If you’re looking to waste your time, this is, without a doubt, the show to watch.
