Most students wake up , go to school, go home , maybe go out with friends , relax and do homework. The latest they sleep is 10, and they usually get as many hours of sleep as they possibly could.
Student athletes wake up early, go to school, get out at around 3, have practice at 4 and get home around 8. On top of that they have a lot of homework and other commitments with family. They end up sleeping around 12 doing their homework and sometimes are not even able to finish it, because of how much they have.
The next day it repeats, and we are constantly tired because of the limited amount of time we sleep. The cycle continues throughout the school year. According to the National Sleep Foundation,“Teens need about 8-10 hours of sleep each night to function best”, and in this case many student athletes are not able to do that.
When student athletes aren't getting enough sleep it causes results that do not benefit them. For example in an article by Global Sports Development it stated “Sleep-deprivation leads to fatigue, which can cause a decrease in both academic and athletic performances.” When this happens it causes results that they do not want, what they want is success. It starts a whole cycle of doing bad in school, performing bad in the sport.
Less sleep also causes depression which can affect the students, especially when they have so much on their plate. An article by PSYCOM stated “Sleep disturbance described as insomnia or hypersomnia, is one of the primary symptoms of major depressive disorder”. When a student has depression it will make them feel worse. This is a clear example of how we need sleep!
Knowing all of this,it leaves us with question, what can we do so that student athletes could get the amount of sleep they need each night? In my opinion I believe that teachers should be more lenient with the amount of homework that they give each night and, keep in mind how much other teachers are also giving them. This may help with the amount of homework students have each night which can lead to them getting more hours of sleep. More sleep will cause better performance outside of school and in school, it will also reduce the amount of stress which many are going through.
I believe that this is a very controversial topic because when it comes to school and athletics, the only way you can do good in athletics is if you are doing well in school. When teachers become more lenient with students, many people will think that’s just the teachers giving student athletes an easy way out of assignments. In reality they benefit a lot from it. What do you think should be done ?
