Anxiety in teenagers has been a big problem. So what is anxiety, really? Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
High school, the big years of our life that determine our future, is pretty nerve wracking so it is not surprising that anxiety for teenagers in high school is pretty high. Teens feel the stress of hard classes and are overwhelmed with extracurricular activities and homework from each class. This is part of the reason why today’s teenagers and young adults are more anxious than ever.
In a survey taken last year by the Pew Research Center, 70% of teens say that anxiety is a major problem amongst their friends. Academically 61% of teenagers say they face a lot of pressure to get good grades.
In a feature in the NY Times states, that 83% for those who want to get into a good college and worry about their grades, deciding what to do after school is 69% of teens and financial concerns for their family is 65% of teens. So stress overall in a teenager is pretty huge considering that it's tough to get into a good college nowadays.
Being a victim to this feeling that puts my stomach in knots, and causes my rapid breathing and makes my heart pound so hard that it feels like it is going to pop out of my chest. Isn’t a fun feeling. And I have been dealing with it since the start of freshman year with getting used to a new campus and getting used to having a lot of work to be done while learning how to manage time. Now senior year with getting good grades, college admission, and SAT’s to get into at least a good college is adding more fuel to the fire. And being the first one in my family to pursue a career plus going to college just makes it even worse to deal with it. So I know 100% on how these stressed out kids feel.
