A homeless woman with her child.
“What is your greatest fear?”, I recall asking from a far-off conversation with my mother when I was a kid. My mother’s expression showed that she already knew her answer would confuse her son. She shortly replied, “Humans”. At the time, I didn’t understand her answer; however, after spending seventeen years in this world, a new perspective surged into my consciousness, which proved that my mother was right.
Here, in America, during this modern time, is one of the most persuasive representatives to cement my thoughts about an insecure world. According to the ABC news, the number of mass shootings around the country in 2018 has risen above 300 so far. While in 2017, the U.S. saw a total of 346 mass shootings.
Recently, I believe we all were shaken to witness the Thousand Oaks mass shooting, which took 13 lives. It’s even more terrifying to know that it was the 307th mass shooting in only just 311 days.
While you’re reading this article, the world out there is swaying in the terror-stricken storm of ammunition and global conflicts: Syria Cilvil War, Afghanistan War, East China Sea tensions,... There are more mass turmoils than you could shake a stick at.
When we look back at human history, it’s obvious that mankind has never stopped hurting their own species. From the Napoleonic Wars to the World War I and II, hundreds of millions of lives have been taken away by those called ‘fellow creatures’. Instead of the the bonded thread that knits lives together, humans have put millions of bullets to other people’s hearts. It scares me how humanity has allowed it to get lost in an onslaught with its own people, making the world change into the kaleidoscope of obnoxious images of massacre and disaster. We are bombarding each other with violence and fracture, and our peace has been shredded into the mass social chaos, aversion, and deep division...
The wheel of human’s destiny has been in motion for a long time, but who knows if it’s just motioning in circle, which would end up where it begins?! It may take a moment for the image of our consequences to come into focus, but when it’s clear; I bet we won’t want to witness it.
I believe that it’s just a matter of time till humans stand together and be united; however, that time only comes when there’s a hazard that goes beyond the scope of human’s grudge, threatening the entire human existence. Not until when we all stand on the same front line, facing the same danger, do our hearts beat as one, do we erase all the tension between us and replace it with a single, unanimous bonding... We need to look at the big picture; the planet is an unifying body, and all of us are different parts with different purposes. Yet we’re entwined, serving each other, serving as a whole. Everything we use in our life, from the smallest nail to the biggest machine, is either direct or indirect contribution from other people. Codependence is human nature.
Mankind could end up in an obtuse future of senseless wars, where the so-called modern society would be buried under the mournful wail of no one else but ourselves. However, it doesn’t have to work that way, we can always write a different story for our future-a better one with a happy ending- simply by discovering a way to live together in peace right now.
