Sweat and blood drips down all over your trembling body. It seems like you’ve been stabbed several times. Sharp pain rushes through your limbs, quickly draining your life. Gasping desperately for breath, you manage to grip the edge of the iron sword, draw it and strike! In a split second, a horrifying enemy lies dead--then his body disappears away with your pain in faint blue light. You have logged out. You’re back into the wound-free real world. With a sigh, you take off your heated lenses. This is the realest AR video game ever made, of course only available inside a drama.
Memories of the Alhambra, the recent Korean drama that is also available on Netflix, is about a new mysterious game called Memories of the Alhambra. The series mostly takes place in Spain and Korea.
This is the game Yoo Jin-woo (Hyun Bin), the CEO of an investment company, the J-One Holdings wants to buy, before any other rival companies snatch their chance away. It all starts from his greed. As soon as he receives an email suggesting this deal, Jin-woo travels to Granada, Spain to meet the creator of the game, Jung Se-joo (Park Chan-yeol). Granada is the first setting of the AR game, and the place where Se-joo promised to meet him. However, Se-joo is nowhere to be found, and instead he meets Se-joo’s sister, Jung Hee-joo, (Park Shin-Hye) a former guitarist, and the owner of the hostel he stays at.
Rushing for the profit ahead, Jin-woo starts testing out the game Se-joo sent him, on his own. The J-One company he owns, specializes in optical devices, and consists of high technology lense to go with the game. You wear the lense to enter the game, and see enemies and warriors from different settings. You can encounter clans and pirates to trade information or missions in certain places. You can level up as your experience rate and health rate increases through success in fighting with enemies. As you reach higher levels, the game allows you gain access to more modern weapons such as guns.
CEO Yoo was a hundred percent sure that this game would be a successful investment, until he notices problems. Life staking problems. These problems hint at what Se-joo might be running away from. Jumping into the blurred space between the AR world and the real world, Jin-woo is the only hope for fixing the software of the game and finding Se-joo.
Hyun Bin (36), most well known for his well-made action films, professionally masters his acting in eye catching actions in various battles scenes inside the AR game. Park Shin Hye (28), successfully acts out two different personalities as a mystical, indifferent character inside the game, and a caring person in the real world.
As the title of the drama indicates, the first mission in the AR game is located in Granada, which is most famous for its Alhambra palace. The Memories of Alhambra is played as the background music of the game along with never ending thunderstorm and rain.
The unique setting of the drama, jumping from modern cities in Seoul, to Granada in the middle ages, and the mixed genre of fantasy, science fiction, thriller, action, and romance are all new challenges of the drama itself, but it blends in terrifically well. Another factor that makes the drama incredibly immersive is the CGs done with great quality, hardly distinguishable from the real world setting. Visuals on screen, including Alhambra, palace of Granada, Barcelona, and Seoul are most beautiful filmed, enough to keep your eyes locked on screen the whole time. It’s definitely a realistic drama that engages all kinds of people and emotions, whether you enjoy games or not.
