“In the town of Greendale, where it always feels like Halloween, there lived a girl who was half-witch, half-mortal who, on her 16th birthday, would have to choose between two worlds: the witch world of her family, and the human world of her friends.”
Based on the Archie Comics of the same name, Sabrina the Teenage Witch swept the nation in the late 90’s. And now, America’s favorite witch-in-training has been resurrected with the arrival of Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in which she walks a slightly darker path than her previous incarnations. Whereas other Sabrina's worried about science tests and school dances, Kiernan Shipka’s version has more pressing problems on her plate — like deciding whether or not to pledge her soul to Satan and vow to serve his dark agenda for all eternity. You know, average everyday teen problems.
Although she’s still a half-witch, half-mortal teen concealing her powers from everyone in the mortal world, this version of Sabrina has made some serious changes for the better. This dark, grungy and ever-so terrifying new revamp is just what Sabrina needed.
The wonderfully macabre update comes courtesy of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also created CW’s Riverdale. And just as with that show, Sabrina takes its familiar cast of characters—Sabrina, her witch aunts, her feline familiar—and sets them in a darker, more mature environment. Fans of Riverdale’s inappropriately-sexy teen ensemble won’t find quite the same level of raging hormones in Sabrina, which just might be the show’s saving grace. I am nowhere near a fan of Riverdale, but I have to admit that Aguirre-Sacasa’s reboot of Sabrina, is a winner.
Sabrina's greatest strengths lie within its “witch” world, a place that gives our hero an arena in which to mess up with magical consequence. Going up against Satan himself, Sabrina doesn’t shy away from that which may be called blasphemy, but that’s exactly what makes it so much fun. Perverted and subverted in the most fraudulent ways, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is one of Netflix’s most recent must-watch shows.
