Ariel Orona from Silver Creek, is gaining a lot of recognition in the news because she was possibly the first female in California to throw a touchdown pass. She played flag football when she was younger, then moved to tackle football her sophomore year. I recently did an interview with Orona, where she discussed how she got into football and how she was hesitant to join an all boys team.
Did you have any doubts about joining the team?
“I did at first, because I didn’t know how the guys were gonna be with me. Actually, they accepted me with open arms and always encouraged me to keep going.” How do you feel about possibly being the first girl in California to throw a touchdown pass? “ It’s overwhelming, but I’m happy that things are changing in the sports world.” How are you handling the news media? “At first it was a little weird, but it has died down a bit.” The team has given you a nickname, right? Do you like it? “Yeah! They call me little mermaid, I think it’s funny.” |
I ended the interview by thanking Orona for her time and I wished her well for the remainder of the season. For any girls or boys out there that are scared to tryout for a sport, TRY OUT! You’ll never know what it’s like until you do it!
