Since hitting Netflix, On My Block has been a huge hit. The show only has ten episodes ranging from 25-30 minutes, making it an easy binge. The cliffhanger at the end of season 1, leaves fans eagerly waiting for the next chapter. I can attest to the fact that this show was pretty good, but I wouldn’t exactly consider myself a die hard fan.Though I am excited for the second season, I can wait.
The series follows four best friends-Ruben (Jason Genao), Monse (Sierra Capri), Jamal (Brett Gray), and Cesar (Diego Tinoco), struggling to keep their friendship intact as they face their first year of high school. They must work through typical issues of love and acceptance while doing their best to avoid the gang violence and constant police presence around them.
With the addition of Olivia (Ronni Hawk), who stays with Ruben because her parents were deported back to Mexico, we enter into a love square between Monse, Ruben, and Cesar. Ruben is tailing after Olivia, while Olivia is crushing on Cesar (played by Diego Tinoco whose acting isn’t great, but is attractive). Monse and Cesar hesitate to develop a relationship between themselves in fear of it ruining their group. And Jamal is the oddball, drawn to finding a mystery deemed Rollerworld, consisting of a hidden treasure.
The plot of the story is almost relatable, but the acting is way too cringy. Jamal is the only genuinely funny character since he’s not trapped in the webs of the love square only because he’s too caught up solving his own problems.
However the storyline hits important subjects such as double standards, peer pressure, and objectification to name a few, which is something we have all experienced in our lives.
On My Block has the potential to be more than just another Netflix show. The whole show promotes diversity, and viewers are pulled into a different culture that they don’t see much of- watching shows that revolves around the teenage mindset.
It is a refreshing break from the same tired “suburbanville” plot and bland one-sided characters. While the setting takes place in a more urban area, the show is not really focused on how harsh the neighborhood is. Instead, it focuses on showing how the kids make do with what they have.
All the actors have confirmed the second season on their Twitter accounts. I think I can speak for all the fans, when I say that I can’t wait.
