Do you believe police officers handle situations correctly? Do you notice the actions police officers take when dealing with certain people? Should officers be trained better? Is the justice system corrupt? These are all questions that I’ve thought about.
I’ve always wondered why police officers always go for the kill shot. They never just wound the person, they automatically kill them. I understand that in some situations it’s necessary to shoot when your life is on the line. However, isn’t that a chance you take when becoming a police officer?
There was a recent article written by ABC news, titled “ Mother pleaded ‘don’t shoot’ to an off -duty LAPD officer who killed mentally ill son in Costco, family says.” In the article, it states how the man pushed the officer causing him to stumble. Some witnesses say the man struck him to the point he was on the ground. The officer then pulled his gun out and shot the man and his family. He shot the man’s family because they ran in front of their son to help him. In total, he shot eight rounds. The officer felt he was shooting to save his life, but I don’t see the need to shoot to kill. Shooting the man once in the leg could have prevented other people being shot, such as his parents.
There are some instances when it comes to having a right to shoot is necessary. For example, school shootings are happening more often. If a cop goes to the scene they have the right to shoot the shooter. They have to protect the other people around. However, if someone is just loitering outside a store or there is a small altercation, then cops should not shoot to kill. Wounding the person makes more sense because then they can speak to the person and hear the reason why the person was doing what they were doing. You can get them help rather than taking their life.
I asked a fellow student at Silver Creek, how he felt about police officers and the way they handle situations that involve shootings. William Hill stated “ Police officers know the dangers of being a cop and should try and not use excessive force in situations that might call for it.” Many people also agree with William.
Although we will never understand the reason cops automatically kill, we need to understand that they are also in fear for their life. They have families just like us, and we are all just trying to make it home at the end of the day.
