Oh my my my, this show is weird. It’s also definitely not safe for work. And I really like it.
Love, Death + Robots is a Netflix anthology series created by Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool. At first glance you can compare these shows based off their sci-fi appearance, but Black Mirror is more rooted into reality than LDR. So get that out of your head right now, because if you go into this show with the expectation that it will be like Black Mirror, you’ll probably be disappointed. LDR has none of the same, “Phone bad, Big Brother watching,” types of messages.
While, yes, it does paint some futures as being incredibly bleak for humanity, it’s always humanity’s hubris that ends up being the problem for most of the stories, and although technology is in the stories, either as helpers or observers. There’s only two episodes where technology is used for malicious purposes, but otherwise it either improves some situations or it’s just there.
Speaking of episodes, most of them are great. I enjoyed, “When the Yogurt Took Over”, now if that sounds ridiculous you’re not at all wrong. That episode has a wild concept about sentient yogurt, but it’s executed perfectly and it’s hilarious to boot. “Three Robots” is also hilarious and it’s pretty entertaining to watch three robots mess around in a post-apocalyptic city. “Suits” is has an awesome plot about farmers defending their land with mechs and is animated amazingly.
And with every list of favorites there’s bound to be least favorites. “The Witness” has no substance. While it does have beautiful animation, you’re essentially watching a prostitute run through a city naked to escape a potential murder. “The Dump” is just ugly and boring. And “Shape-Shifters” is extremely forgettable. I had to look at the show’s episode list several times just to remember that this even existed.
I think this show is excellent. While I don’t get why most of this show was photorealistically animated, I’ll excuse it due to its concepts. Another warning to those looking to watch this show at school or work, don’t. There’s a lot, and I mean, A LOT, of nudity and gore. Find someplace safe, secure and comfy while watching. I’m ranking Love, Death + Robots a 7/10.
