During the last year of high school, there are many things to look forward to other than just prom, welcome back crowns, and graduation. One event that many senior student athletes look forward to is the last home game of every sport’s season, when the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are in charge of buying gifts and making posters for the seniors to congratulate them on having a good season. It acts as a send off for the seniors and is a well-known Silver Creek tradition.
This year there was a huge fire in the city of Napa that spread smoke into the valley, making the air too polluted for any outdoor activities. Games, practices, and P.E. classes were cancelled or moved indoors for two days. This impacted the tennis team because their senior game was cancelled, the coaches decided against moving it to a different day, so this year’s seniors would not have an official senior night.
Many team members were upset, especially the four-year athletes who had looked forward to this night since their freshman year. Senior night is almost a rite of passage, and the girls have been stripped of this.
As a senior member of the tennis team, I wasn’t too upset at first since I had played so many games I didn’t mind not playing. But then I remembered all the senior nights that I had helped prep and realized the value of this night. My best friend and I have been on the tennis team since our freshman year and we remember how excited the seniors were and how much it meant to them.
In a last minute effort, the team’s manager and coaches decided to make a senior night a game against the boy’s tennis team. Although appreciative, the girl’s team wasn’t too thrilled with it. Most of the boy’s team has graduated or left the tennis team to try a different sport, which made putting together a good game kind of difficult. They were only able to round up 7 to 8 players from the boys team and many of the girls decided to not participate. The girls instead indulged themselves in snacks and cake that everyone brought.
The team however will all have one last event, the banquet on November 19th for their banquet where they will be presented awards and say their final goodbyes.
